Although few people like the February frosts and darkness, there is one day worth waiting for. This is when lovers all over the world send each other Valentine's Day cards. Even children draw colorful cards with big hearts for their friends and put them in the mailboxes at school.
Although the custom of sending Valentine's Day cards came to Poland quite recently, it is actually very old and comes all the way from ancient Rome. The first Valentine was sent in the 3rd century AD. The author was none other than Saint Valentine.
The patron saint of lovers lived in a time when it was exceptionally difficult to talk about love. At that time, Emperor Claudius Gothicus issued a ban on marriage for men who were to join the army. Bishop Valentine, however, ignored the ban and continued to marry lovers, for which he was sentenced to death. Legend has it that he fell in love with the blind daughter of a guard, and his love restored the girl's sight. Before his execution, he wrote her a love letter, which he signed: "Your Valentine".
For centuries, lovers in difficult situations have traveled to the tomb of Saint Valentine in Italy to ask for his blessing and strength to survive difficult times. The legend of this bishop still gives strength to couples from all over the world, symbolized by the Valentine's Day postcards sent every year.
Is this story true? Of course - every legend that tells about love is true, even if it did not really happen and is not mentioned in history books.
Valentine's Day cards with original illustrations by Andrzej Tylkowski
For young couples who are just getting to know the corners of their character, Valentine's Day cards are an important confirmation of commitment. Their feelings are still fresh and it is no wonder that they need to talk about it, dance and sing about it.
Over time, it turns out that our other half is not a perfect prince or princess in a beautiful robe without a single stain or loose thread. Sometimes he leaves socks under the bed, doesn't really like our favorite records, and what's worse, eats dumplings with mayonnaise. Then Valentine's Day cards say that we accept this new fairy tale and wouldn't trade our mornings together over cereal coffee for anything else.
Everyone associates love with something different. For some, it's spending time alone together, when no words are needed. For others, it's cooking together and washing dishes. For others, it's laughing at your own jokes like children, even though no one else understands what's funny about them. Contrary to what romantic movies tell us, love isn't always dinners in luxurious restaurants and expensive wines. It's also cheap lunches in milk bars and tea in your favorite mug with a teddy bear.
Our Valentine's Day postcards tell about every aspect of love. Even the one that only you understand. Check it out, maybe some of them show your favorite moments that you often return to, even though your friends don't see anything romantic in them.
